Get more Zs: Six apps that track and improve your sleeping habits

We’ve all been told sleep is important. The average adult needs between 7 and 8 hours a night. But a survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that most of us aren’t getting near that amount.

Of the nearly 75,000 adults they talked to, 35 percent reported sleeping fewer than 7 hours a night and almost 38% percent reported falling asleep during the day at least once in the preceding month.

Sleep Time +

Sleep Time + combines sleep tracking metrics, alarms and relaxation sounds to help you sleep. It’s available for Android and iOS. The app uses your phone’s sensors to measure your sleep quality by tracking your motion. It analyzes those sleep patterns over time, and uses the data to set an alarm to wake you up during your lightest sleep phase. It also provides easily accessible chart metrics of your nightly sleep patterns.

Sleepbot

Good news for Android users: this app is completely free! Not only does it track your sleep patterns, it also tracks your movement. With its auto-recording feature, you can discover if you have breathing problems, snore or talk while you sleep. You can clock in and out when you go to bed and wake up, and it syncs with the Sleepbot webapp so you can access even more detailed analytics.

MotionX 24/7

This sleep tracker integrates with Apple’s Health app and boasts a heart-rate monitor and pedometer. MotionX 24/7 is similar to other sleep tracking apps. It wakes you up at your lightest sleep cycle and lets you set goals for the number of hours of sleep you want each night, as well as how many steps you want to take during the day.

SleepCycle

This app records your sleeping habits by using the iPhone’s accelerometer, which detects motion and cues its smart alarm to help you wake you up at the optimal time. The accelerometer also helps the app create a graph of your sleeping habits and lets you make notes each morning on your sleep quality. It also has heart rate monitoring, white noise, and morning weather forecasts.

Relax Melodies

This app doesn’t measure your sleep metrics or heartbeat, but it does offer 64 melodies to help you calm down and fall asleep naturally. It also utilizes binaural beats- two different sound frequencies- that help your brain relax and sleep come easier. There is a built-in alarm and timer system and you can mix and match different sounds like ocean, nature, rain shower and white noise.

Pzizz

Pzizz is similar to Relax Melodies. It doesn’t track your sleep metrics, but it does allow you to pick music and sound effects to de-stress for a duration of time and it has more than 10 billion combinations of audio tracks.
